TRT Global Communications was better known as Tropical Radio and
Telegraph. The name was usually shortened to "Tropical Radio."
Tropical Radio was started by the United Fruit Company to link
their ships and plantations with headquarters in the US. Tropical
Radio later morphed from an in-house enterprise into a full fledged
common carrier. It was one of the International Record Carriers
that carried international telex and telegraph traffic into and out
of the US. The other IRCs were RCA Global Communications, ITT World
Communications, Western Union International, French Telegraph Cable
Co., Cable and Wireless and several others. Most of the IRCs have
vanished or been taken over by other companies.
If you were located in or near a so-called "gateway city," you could
get international telex service from one of the IRCs. A telex machine
installed by an IRC was fully compliant with international telex
standards.
