Thanks for all of your replies, both on- and off-list!

Here is what I've gathered:

 * The ST-5000 is not an ideal contesting TU, and the ST-6 that I
   haven't yet restored would serve me better in that capacity.

 * Some of the signal troubles I had on the band may have been due to
   commercial TU 200 Hz shifts, which I hadn't considered.

 * The alignments I did are generally OK, but it was also suggested
   that I check the limiter DC offset and balance, as it can be
   critical.

Several people were concerned about the 2-B IF bandwidth and its
affect on alignment, but I assure you that I did not try to align the
unit through the 2-B.  :-)  I used known good tones at a controllable
amplitude for that!

I'll check a few more things on the ST-5000, but it looks like I'll be
focusing my major efforts on getting the ST-6 online.  I've been
meaning to do that for quite some time, anyway, and already have the
parts on the shelf.
