One for our American cousins...

The Legal Tender Act was passed on this day in 1892, thereby legalising 
paper money (the "greenback") that was not backed by gold etc.  It was 
needed to pay for the Civil War (the Southerners were already printing 
their own notes).

And I'll never know how you guys can tell those notes apart; I spent a 
week in Texas once, and I had to look really carefully!

And perhaps not uncoincidentally, Vlacheslav Mikhaylovich Skryabin, a 
Russkie revolutionary, was born in 1890; he took the name "Molotov"...
