With respect to the friend in Detroit, (1969 and later), his name was (Neil) Doug Frede.
After noting the link kindly supplied by Nick,
http://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/jh/ttyman4/AnalysisCharts/LP800-AC.pdf
I noted references to 'tabbing' both horizontal and vertical, and other typing 'motion'
situations.
At one point, Doug put together a 28 Printer that had both online REVERSE PRINT and
online REVERSE LINE FEED. These were accomplished with Stunt Box sequences. It
was most amazing to see this machine in operation, doing these 'stunts'.
Doug had a Model 32 ASR machine that he used to create a fairly long tape that was created
to put that 28 printer through its paces.
It would be typing what appeared to be a news story. At some point, a letter would be skipped
in a word, but a space put in place. Somewhere down the line, the machine would stop printing,
and send a string of LTRS characters, as if 'thinking'. Then the necessary stunt box sequence
would be sent, then the machine would 'space back' to the empty spot, another stunt box sequence
would be sent to restore normal printing, then the 'missing letter' would be put in place, the printer
would space back to where it left off and continue printing as if nothing had happened!
For people who thought they knew the 28 pretty well, it was interesting to see their faces when that
machine would get to the end of a line, do a linefeed, then print the next line BACKWARDS do
another linefeed then print 'left to right' as usual.
Another 'trick' in that tape was to omit a letter in a word, leaving a space, then continue on, typing
maybe a half dozen new lines. Then, the "LTRS sequence" would happen again, another stunt box
sequence would put the machine into REVERSE LINE FEED and skip back up to the line with the
missing letter, work the typebox to the necessary position, fill in the missing letter, then LINE FEED
back down to where it left off and back to 'business as usual' and continue printing.
As I said, that tape ran for maybe 10 minutes and had a number of the above 'printing stunts' in it.
It was indeed a work of art, especially for people who were not aware of the capabilities of the 28
printer.
I have a 28 printer that will do online REVERSE PRINT, with a stunt box sequence. This printer has the
necessary parts for HORIZONTAL TAB and I think that this is necessary to fully implement ON LINE
REVERSE PRINT. (Don't quote me on that, though.) Even though no 'tabbing' takes place. Some of
the other parts in that "Mod Kit" are probably required for online reverse print.
I hope to someday put together a 'demo tape' and make a video showing reverse print for the Greenkeys
gang. I first have to get the printer to print clean text. This might require a new platen and a typebox
with new pallets. (And a new or like-new ribbon.)
Imagine the 'disbelief' in someone's face when they see alternate lines printed, right to left at full
machine speed!
Watch this space for further details.
