[GreenKeys] Rhyme or Reason involved in Baudot Characters -vs- Bits?

Emil Baudot's original "Printing Telegraph" only had 5 keys on the
keyboard - you had to memorize the code! So his code was set up to make
it easier to learn. Also, Baudot's printer was just a tape printer, so
he had no LF or CR characters.

Around 1990, Donald Murray came up with the idea of storing 5 bit
messages on tape (like was done with morse). He also developed a page
printer, so he needed CR & LF. Murray redefined the 5 bit code so that
the most used characters had the fewest punches, so there would be less
wear on the machines. The ITA-2 code we use is derived from Murray's code.

For and in-depth discussion of these codes see
http://www.circuitousroot.com/artifice/telegraphy/tty/codes/

As far as the BLANK key, it  is used (shifted) on weather machines. And
on the 3 level shift (Figures/Latin/Cyrillic)  T63 machine, "00000" is
the command to shift to the Cyrillic characters.

Have fun,
