[GreenKeys] A trip through Paul Cerumba’s place

Did I say (no I didn’t) I was currently working on a tube AM transmitter? QRP (low power for the non-hams) at 5 watts. It’s in the January 2018 edition of QST magazine. Talk about old school!
And did you see that Curious Marc gave credit to John Nagle in the segment when he got his Model 15 completed? The BaudotRSS software and John’s new TTYLoopDriver device.

Steve, both your examples are great ones and highlight the kind of inventiveness that is possible while still including teletypes. It’s really something to see - old and new working together.
It mirrors what is happening in the ham radio world with the shift to digital modes and SDR. Where I live the 2M repeaters are pretty much silent while people tell me the digital modes are very active and technology is developing fast.
It also mirrors what is happening in the retro computing world with emulators of old computers.
I personally am sad to see the old technology decline as much as it has (I’m one of those people who are into tube radios, analog phone systems, old computers, old cars ... get it?). But I absolutely know things must progress with modern technology if we want people to be/stay interested and excited and participate. That’s just how it is, and it sounds like that’s where you are active Steve. Bravo! Have fun! We need new stuff. That’s what the maker movement is all about. Plenty of room to play and invent. And lots of people involved.
As for me, I might participate, but also I’ll occasionally sit quietly in my corner preserving (living in?) the past.... ;-)

Should have added…
In expanding my marriage of old and new technology, when I do get set up to transmit over RF, I want to use a software defined radio. From the TTY to a TU (Terminal Unit) that coverts the TTY signals to an audio signal that is then fed to a radio for transmission. My experience with this is basically nil, but when I tried it earlier this year I was unable to get the radio to transmit. I had the audio being converted as I had a speaker hooked up so I was getting what sounded a lot like ITTY when I was typing on the keyboard, but the radio wasn’t being keyed to transmit. Back to the drawing board.
Our fellow Greenkeyer, Russ, WA3FRP, does this quite well and won an award earlier this year for his efforts in the ARRL RTTY Roundup.

Does not surprise me that those guys use John’s program while Paul uses ITTY.
One thing I’ve learned from this group is either you are a RTTY guy or you are not. Or to phrase another way, either you actually want to use RTTY signaling (either on HF or ITTY) at times for the RTTY experience, or you do not want to use it at all because that’s not your thing.
There’s plenty of room in this hobby for both types of enthusiasts.

And in the Part 2 video at about the 7:30 minute mark it looks like the line that is typed is the prompt from John Nagle’s BaudotRSS program, or something very similar to it!

I’m still watching the series of videos that Curious Marc is doing on his teletype Model 19. In his latest one they went to visit Paul.
You may know him as Mr. RTTY. If you want to see what his place looks like, you can see it here:

Side note: I was proud to see ITTY running in the background!
