That's sort of the whole problem. If your setup were exactly the same as mine,
it would just work. But if anything's different, it gets much harder to account
for what kind of computer, what serial adapter, what version of everything, etc. 
HeavyMetal was a pretty good attempt but also a really big program suffering
from not being maintained too much for a while. 

The other approach is dedicated hardware - I set up a couple of people with a
pre-configured raspberry pi with all the software already installed, but then
the same problem comes up if they want to add something new - their current
setup isn't what the new thing is expecting. 

I don't really have any good solutions but it's definitely a big part of the
challenge of computer systems in general.
