[GreenKeys] ebay .... Teletype ASR-33

Hey Wayne - appreciate the document and guidance! I will indeed *not* touch the keyboard... <clears throat> any further than I might have already done <COUGH>

Regarding shipping screws, it was sent to me with the stand removed and I followed the seller's instructions to reassemble in reverse order. In doing that I am fairly certain I *did* lay it on its back while I got those clips in place.

I'm going to carefully replace keyboard cover. Let me get working on that Training Manual. I've attached a photo of the right side of the keyboard. Those pins look ok?
I noticed that if I fiddle with the Break key the "tone" of the chattering changes. OK - going to get that keyboard cover back on and check those shipping screws.😊

cheers!
Andy

Andy,

Dont work on the keyboard!

The problem is likely due to shipping without the printer shipping screws or if you picked it up and laid the machine on its back without the printer shipping screws.

The printer sits in 4 rubber mounts and is held in by gravity alone. Its what helped to make the 33 a quieter machine.

Most 33 problems can be found by visual means, so dont tear anything apart or make any adjustments till you are sure. Its likely the printer is out of the mounts now or has been and that is the primary cause of the keyboard being jammed.

If you want to chat some time, let me know and maybe I can help.

Meantime I will attach a file that had the training manual in it. Its a large file, so be patient.

Best regards,

Wayne

Hi everyone- this is my first successful posting on Greenkeys. Thank you Gil for fixing my inability to properly register earlier this week. Anyway.... I recently emotionally purchased a modestly priced ebay Teletype<https://www.ebay.com/itm/Teletype-ASR-33-Teleprinter-Machine-VINTAGE/192506680051> ASR-33 which the seller claimed had run just fine before packing it up for me.

It is indeed seems in good cosmetic condition, both inside and out. I’ve done some gentle superficial cleaning and lubricating/greasing before powering up. Print head looked new, capacitors physically seemed good (from what my inexperienced eyes could tell.)

Anyway I threw caution to the wind and powered up. Chatters in on Line Mode (as expected) but also in Local Mode (shouldn't do that, right?) Also the keys feel "locked" and do not depress (so nothing types in local mode anyway.)

I’ve been reading non-stop and frankly I am not sure where I should begin. I'm a little afraid to tear open the keyboard if that's the first place to start.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of something on par with an Idiots Guide to “first steps” or general troubleshooting? I have some technical manuals which mostly explain assembly/disassembly and theory of operations.

Thanks in advance!
Andy
