Some of the D-spec stuff I've seen was nearly identical to
the standard models but may have gone through additional QC. I
don't know. An example that is at hand is a microphone D95921,
this is a WE 630A, the first moving coil microphone to be made
commercially. Its a motion picture version differing outwardly
from the 630A in being finished in black wrinkle rather than
baked bronze and having a Type P connector rather than the
special connector supplied on the broadcast and public address
versions. There do not appear to be any internal differences but
there could be small performance differences which are not
apparent. I also have a pair of WE moving coil headphones but I
don't think there was a commercial version of them. Similar
phones were listed as accessories for WE broadcast consoles under
the D spec number. A lot of the WE sound recording apparatus has
D spec numbers. My retired Bell Labs friend told me a great deal
of inside information about WE, Bell Labs and ERPI but I never
wrote anything down. Too dumb.
