I should think most members of this list know that a WE type
number with the prefix KS means it was obtained from an outside
supplier. The letters mean Kearny Spec or Kearny Stock, from
Kearny N.J. a large WE supply plant. Another fairly common
prefix is D called D spec. This is stuff that was either build by
Bell Labs or under direct supervision of Bell Labs (got this from
a now SK friend who worked for the labs). Most D-spec stuff I've
seen was made for the motion picture industry but undoubtedly
there were many other applications.
While we are at it some items were sold with a type number
ending is W such as headphones 509W. The W means it was made for
sale outside of the Bell System. You can sometimes find the same
items without the W when made for the Bell System.
