3D printing is an amazing technology. And the printers are affordable now for average Joe. You have to go through a little learn curve to understand the machine and software - after that, you can create or recreate that particular piece you need. But how often do you really have use for one of these printers. I decided not to go that route because there are quite a few 3D printing services now on the Internet. There is a local service here in Atlanta (GA Tech students) they develop a new and easy-to-use software - you do your own design online and click enter. Make sure you have your credit card ready - but it is definitely affordable. I have to look for that website again.

Subject: [GreenKeys] 3D printed platen for M14 tape printer
The old platen on our M14 tape printer was incredibly hard and brittle, so we 3D printed a replacement. The material used is a nylon-elastomer blend. It's very strong and tough, but perhaps a bit too hard, as the type is still cutting a bit into the paper and ribbon.
We have some softer material to try and i think it should turn out well, will test it in the next week or so.

We also 3D printed a paper tape holder as the original was missing.
