Here's another thought on all this.

A punch only requires current during the punch of a character.
At 60 WPM that's once every 165 mS.
Obviously more frequently when dealing with a Model 19 when
the keyboard is disconnected from the machine, assuming the
operator is capable of typing faster than 60 WPM.
But still, it only has to make the punch work, and has a lot of
leeway on timing.

My other thought.

I've always wondered why they made these beast power supplies.
Certainly they all seem to be a "bit" over sized for use with a
single machine. So it would make more sense that the ability for
them to deal with multiple machines running at the same time.

For example, especially when used as the signalling battery, the
output has to be pretty stiff to keep from introducing cross talk
across the multiple lines. As a punch supply, not so much.
