Basically, it's a mechanical shift register!  What a technical marvel, but 
I don't think my landlord would appreciate me having one (even if I could 
afford it).

I did play with glass RTTY at one time, but despite being a computer 
programmer for 40+ years I guess I'm a mechanical engineer at heart; as a 
kid, I was always pulling things apart to see how they worked (my parents 
even bought me a "plastic clock" to stop me from attacking the family's!).  
Yes, how did you know that I had a Meccano set?
