 A bit off topic already, but . . .

I believe the "up for on" switch orientation is a carry-over from the
days of open knife switches.  It may even still be an NEC rule that
for safety reasons a knife switch must be mounted such that the pull
of gravity causes the switch to open.  Or in other words, "off" must
be down, to reduce the likelihood of the circuit being energized
accidentally.
