Hi all!
It is always a sad thing when a casting part on any
piece of TTY becomes broken...
I know exactly how Pete feels...
A couple years back, I had bid on a near mint condition
Model 26KSR for a very reasonable price, and waited
excitedly for it to arrive...
Well, the excitement turned to horror once I got it
unpacked...
Despite it being well packed, UPS courier service managed
to drop the carton at an angle accross the bottom edge...
The result was a complete fracture of the entire cast base
just behind the printing unit and the bending of the sheet
metal base plate...
In addition, the slip connection contact brackets on both
base and printing unit were damaged beyond repair...
I was really devestated by this...
>From that bad experience with UPS, I wouldn't. trust them
to ship a donkey cart!
In my opinion, Pete's base is well worth saving...
It is a fully loaded version with a lot of options not seen
on most bases...
I was looking at Pete's fotos, and it is apparent there was
already a weakened area, as evidenced by the rust visble
in the fractured area...
It was pbly well on the way to breaking already, and took
little pressure to finish off the fracture...
I am sure you have all heard of a product called
"JB" weld, I have not used it myself, but apparently
can work wonders on cast metals, iron, etc...
This base appears to be the older iron type, and perhaps
can be welded by conventional means which wud be
a better, stronger result in the long run...
I wish you luck with this project Pete, and hopefully
you can salvage the base...
