I thought other members might be interested to know, so I'm posting this
publicly.

Yes, these are on nice metal spools, and they do fit standard typewriters
(half-inch ribbon and 2-inch spools). Most modern spools are plastic, and
many aren't 12 yards long like these are.

I already had an empty metal spool exactly like these that had been left
behind in an old typewriter I inherited; it's the one on the bottom of the
attached photo IMG_0457. The spools were shrinkwrapped, and by that I mean
that someone in the mid-80s sealed shrinkwrap-style plastic around them but
never shrunk the plastic. This probably contributed to why they're lighter
than I had hoped. There are also fingerprints  from whomever handled them
before sealing them, which is partially why the spool looks so dim at the
top of the image compared to the shiny spool I already had at the bottom.
