[GreenKeys] A good ebay resolution -- this time

A related experience dealing in the other direction – with an insincere seller – was that several years ago I made a personal purchase (not mediated by eBay) using PayPal to transfer the funds. After 10 months of a variety of excuses (some reasonable, and some definitely not) for failing to ship the components (which would fit into a USPS Medium Flat-Rate Box; nothing heavy or bulky) I politely pointed out that because of the size of the transaction it was reportable-income to him (> $600 requires a Form 1099-MISC) and that I would be listing it in my Tax Return, including the record of the PayPal transaction (and thus his bank account information). He could “take it up” with the (US) IRS if he failed to list that income on his own Tax Return. Or he could refund my money before end-December – then just a few weeks away – and I would then not bother to report the transaction since there was a balancing refund within the same tax year.
It was a long shot, but I was (naturally!) desperate.
Well … he rushed to his bank, cashed the CD that he had (reportedly) purchased with the funds, and I had my funds back (via PayPal) within the week. And then his wife got into the action, complaining that I was being unfair about the whole matter!
I can only imagine that he had other reasons to not want to “get involved” with the IRS that tax year.
In the end I was very lucky.
And I did eventually acquire what I wanted from elsewhere for a slightly smaller total cost :->.
So, a stratagem to consider should you find yourself in a similar predicament. Mention The Spanish Inquisition; nobody likes the Spanish Inquisition …
(apologies if I’ve strayed too far OT, however Gil-made-me-do-it!)

Dear online buyer:
If you send me a "cashier's check" for $2000 more than the transaction price, yeah, I will refund you the difference before the alleged check clears the bank. You seem nice. I trust you.
You want to meet me to purchase my Craigslist item out by the old abandoned quarry? Sounds good. Let's do it after dark. I will come by myself and leave me sidearm at home -- you seem like a real straight-shooter.
You're in Nigeria? It's a good thing that I love you and you love me. We will be together soon -- I just need to send you about $40,000 more and then you can forward those crates of gold bullion to me and it will be pure bliss. I can't wait honey! Hugs and kisses. Until we meet again. Er, I mean, until we meet for the first time!

You could write something like this on the bottom of your eBay item description and highlight the message :
"The item will be shipped only after proof of payment through PayPal, money order, personal check and the payment is 100% cleared" !!!

Hi Wayne -
I'm curious to hear what their advice was? I haven't sold much on ebay lately, but you hear so much about scams these days... Any tips they gave you would probably be appreciated by everyone on the list if you'd care to share it...
Thanks,
Keith
PS Glad your 33 sold. It was beautiful!

Fellow Greenkeyers,
For once a good result with ebay folks.
I listed a restored 33 ASR and ran into a buyer who claimed he paid me but did not. The machine was finally sold on the Greenkeys list! That is where I should have started of course.
Talking with ebay a few times and finally they canceled all my reserve listing fees and gave me good advice for the next time I list.
A good outcome and I promised I would pass on the good resolution to the list.
73,
Wayne
