Hi all
There is a lot of talk these days about i-Telex
For the danish 'datahistorical society', www.datamuseum.dk, I designed a
telex exchange system, which was to support any make, any speed, any
characterset, etc. The system is programmed in Delphi 6, runs any Windows
and is based on Jacks RS232-current loop design. This design has been
expanded with 3 buttons, so you can establish and break a connection, or run
Local mode.
In the beginning, there was just the exchange logic, so when you had e.g. 8
printers, you could make 4 independent connections.
Of course service messages like Occupied, Not available etc are supported.
The printers have a unique 5 digit subscriber number.
Later on, extra things were implemented, like 'listening in', Redirect, etc.
Then there was a request for supporting e-mails, so now a teleprinter can
receive and send normal e-mails, of course limited by the 5-bit character
set. Invali'd characters are converted either to periods or to strings like
'(at)'
The way to send e-mails to a teleprinter is like this : the address is the
normal e-mail address, but in order to select one of the printers in the
system, the Subject line has a special format : <subscriber number> followed
by the subject. This will put the e-mail in the mailbox belonging to the
specific printer, and then the task belonging to the printer will find the
e-mail and print it.
The latest addition is the support of kryptographic systems like the Siemens
T100/M190 combination. The system can either behave like a T100/M190 setup,
or it can 'listen in' on a line between two krypto sets, printing either the
encrypted message, or the translated one. This is possible, because the key
tapes are generated by the system itself.
There is at present only a danish user manual, but I can translate it into
English. Afterwards, I would need someone to proof-read and correct, as
English is only my third Language, Dutch being first, and danish second :-)
¨German is my 4th best language.
I would love to receive comments and / or questions on the system described
above.
As a closing note, I will add that I've just started talking to Fred on how
to make these two systems talk together, so we can have the best of both
worlds.
Nico
