Last year I acquired an AN/UGC-74(B) (circa 1986; there was a placard on
the machine saying its warranty expired in 1992). During my research of
this machine's history, one person via Reddit claimed he had been one of
the last U.S. military personnel to deploy RATT rigs, including this
teletype model, in Iraq as late as 2005. He said it was a highly unusual
operation, and the vast majority of units had already been phased out
prior. He said those unusual few units were shortly thereafter phased out
when the need for whatever special operation they were performing ended.
