Actually, the R-274(*)/FRR is more convoluted than that.

SX-73 based = R-274/FRR and R-274D/FRR

SP-600-JX based = R-274A/FRR and R-274C/FRR

SP-600-JX6 based = R-274B/FRR

Another good bad example is the AN/URM-25 family, which ran from the basic 
all the way out to the L model.  There are four different signal generators, 
all with the same basic set nomenclature.
