The plane was a MiG-25 and it was landed in Hokkaido, Japan in 1976 by a
defecting Soviet pilot. It was not shot down, far as I know.
It was found to use the 6C33C tube in a primary voltage regulator. The
6C33C dual-triode is like a very hefty version of the 6AS7G / 6080WA or the
6336A - high Gm, exceptionally low rp (like, 60R) and consequently very low
mu. They are designed to handle serious power, and can run very hot - and
can be extremely hard on the socket, which requires regular replacement.
Some form of air cooling is a requirement, which isn't so hard to come
across in an aircraft.
This page seems to have good info on it: http://www.tubetvr.com/favtube.html
