[GreenKeys] 28 typing reperf - trouble printing FIGS characters

Here's some info I couldn't find in the manual and may save someone else
from pulling out his/her hair.

I am working on a 28 ROTR typing reperf. If I send it one character at a
time, it'll punch FIGS and the typewheel will flip into the FIGS position
and stay there just like it should. It will type FIGS characters until I
send it a LTRS character.
If I run my FOX test generator into it, the punched FIGS character is still
OK, but the typewheel flips back into LTRS position on the next character.
What is happening?
The tape is OK, but the printing isn't. The FOX should not be jumping over
the dog QWERTYUIOP times! Same behavior at 60wpm or 100 wpm.

Here's what I eventually figured out - the test generator is sending a
space after "DOG(FIGS)." and before 1234567890. Yep, this reperf has
Unshift-on-Space. That's a new one on me. I couldn't find any info on this
in the manual, so I am typing this up for the greenkeys archives.

This is a Miniature ROTR with the tape reel on top so I couldn't see the
function blades without some disassembly (yet again). And there it was, an
extra function blade that was getting actuated on SPACE. So I started to
remove it - oops can't get it out because the BELL switch assembly is in
the way. But what's this? There is a metal sleeve over the spring for the
SPACE function blade. Oh, it has a slot in it at the top - I bet if I turn
it, the lack of a slot will keep the function blade raised. Well, by golly,
there is even a little notch on the side opposite the slot to keep the
blade in the disabled position. Of course I had unhooked the spring from
the blade by this time so I had to thread some thin wire through the tube
to pull the spring through and hook it up. Yes the metal tube's notch works
swell and the FOX now jumps 1234567890 times.

So the moral of this story is that there is an easy way to disable/enable
Unshift-on-Space if you have a reperf with this feature - just rotate that
metal sleeve to hold up or release the SPACE function blade.

Once again, I stand in total awe of those clever lads at Teletype Corp.
