I see your thoughts are the same as mine.  I don’t think I would have the skill or want to take the time to do all that is really needed to replace the wires.

Good advice from Tom!

One thing to do with questionable wiring coming out of a motor is to slide a sleeve of heatshrink tubing down over the wire and as far into the motor as you can. 
Or use some other sleeve material that a) won't melt and b) won't conduct electricity!

Motor disassembly is not for the faint hearted or the uninitiated!

 

Special tools are needed for the removal of the end bells and the armature.

 

Namely the Teletype bearing puller, and an arbor press.

 

If you are tempted to take out the bells and bearings with a big "kabonger", you will do major irreparable damage to it.
