Yes, and around the corner is 2600 N. Southport, the other entrance of the
building that still stands. The building was eventually block long, but
most was torn down and replaced by condos with driveways.
The original light fixtures were much more dignified and solid. The ones
there now have thing metal strips which blow in the wind and eventually
break off.
You might also look at 4400 W. Fullterton Ave., which was another Teletype
location. I don't think it ever had the name over the door, but several
years ago the whole building was still standing. Supposedly it was
originally occupied by a maker of slot machines and then was acquired by
Teletype as a factory since even the production machinery would have been
similar. In later years it was home to the sales organization, and also
was where odd products were made. The time-division transistor multiplex
systems were made there. Also Model 19s just before the 28ASR became
available.
There is an archway in the middle of the building leading to a parking
lot and loading docks. The back side of the building is cut off by a
railroad embankment. I worked at Wrightwood, but happened to be
at Fullerton one day when a big semi truck got stuck under the archway,
just about quitting time. I don't know if the employees whose cars were
blocked in got paid extra for the delay in getting out. I know it snarled
up traffic for several hours, because the city had an agreement with all
the big companies along the street to stagger their working hours so as
to not have the whole street gridlocked at 5PM. I don't remember now how
I got out. Maybe we had taken the bus from Wrightwood, or maybe we had
been allowed to park our car in the visitors area in front of the
building.
