[GreenKeys] Why has the '#' symbol been called a number sign, pound sign, and now 'hashtag'?

I like octothorpe. I think maybe the sign should be called a hatch
or hash mark likely derived from hatching, a way of making half-tones in
drawing or etching. AKA, cross-hatching or hachure.
