Back when I was living in Sydney, we had a VHF/UHF Postcode Contest (zip 
code to you Americans), where we had to work as many postcodes as possible 
(simplex, no repeaters); there was no prize, but merely recognition.  I 
used to return my sheets "I certify that I used no repeaters, and that I 
had fun".

"Sorry, OM, we've worked before; CQ Postcode 2076!"  There was the 
occasional query from an out-of-stater when the lift was on, wondering 
what the heck was happening...

And then there was a proposed packet radio contest, which I immediately 
killed off when I pointed out that it could easily be automated :-)  Just 
two threads: one calling CQ, and the other listening for calls that I 
hadn't logged (and remember that everyone is 5x9, and what was your 
callsign again?).
