"Ace in the Hole" directed by Billy Wilder, with Kirk Douglas. Its
been many years since I've seen it. I don't remember the alternative
title (maybe "The Big Circus"?). One of the four film noir classics
Wilder made in his early Hollywood career. Its been too long since I've
seen it but at the time I thought it was not up to the other three.
This was inspired by an actual incident that happened in the 1920s
where a fellow named Floyd Collins was trapped in a cave and the rescue
was covered day by day in the newspapers. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Collins
for more.
