[GreenKeys] Friden SFD-V

Well.... I'm not sure whether the unlatch cam or the power roller is the CR/TAB problem. But, I think it is solved. I did not apply any epoxy to the cam, but I applied a layer of duct tape over the power roller. Then, as if by magic both the carriage return and tab functioned perfectly. I applied a wide piece of tape and this affected a bunch of cams, which screwed them up, but proved the point. So I removed the wide tape and cut an accurate narrow piece which I applied so that it just affected the CR/TAB cam. So, now the typing unit seems to operate quite well. I was using the typing unit to record my notes and I typed a couple pages without any machine errors. There were plenty of my typing errors though. I wonder if the real problem is with the power roller. I suppose that it could be repaired to have a new rubber surface, but I do not know the specifications or who might be able to preform such a task.
Next, I want to clean and lube the punch and reader. I figure I can make some tapes and test them on my ASR33. Well, maybe later. Thanks for the help. Mike Zahorik (414) 254-6768

Thanks for the link to the documents. I have looked at a bunch of them. I think I fixed the UPPER/lower case keys and the space bar. Seems the cams are the sensitive adjustment here. But currently I having a lot of trouble with the carriage return and tab functions. I feel that the trouble lies with the unlatch cam. If I manually reset the CR unlatch cam, the tab or carriage return works every time, but after each successful CR/TAB, the unlatch cam will not rotate far enough to reset itself back to it's starting position. I have to do that myself. What happens is this cam will stop rotating at the highest point of the cam, it has already released the latch 244 and the function is complete, but the cam will not reset. I have cleaned the cam and the power roller. Inspection shows that the cam is slipping at high point. I see that there is damage to the ribs on the cam at this point. Looks like a groove that affects the last 6 or 8 ribs. The worst damage is on the last ribs, maybe 30% of the rib is ground down. The power roller looks OK, seems round and flat at least for this cam. I wonder how the cam ribs were damaged. I'm thinking that maybe the cam is bad. I read the section on how to replace a cam, but I don't have a replacement. I was thinking that maybe I could build up the cam at this point with some epoxy, just to see if this is the problem. I could easily chip it off later.
I also tried the punch and reader for the 1st time. The punch works pretty good, making a few mistakes. Probably needs some cleaning and lube. The reader doesn't work as well. I also noticed that with the punch switch on, occasionally the unit will jam after certain keys are used. And it also effects how some of the other functions work. For example the space bar wants to double space more than with the punch off. I suspect the extra load of the punch unit is doing this. Maybe after a cleaning and lube it will not do this. We will see. Thanks for the help.

look here for docs:
http://bitsavers.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/pdf/friden/

I have a president and a SPD and although the docs are not completely
the same, the mechanics are very similar.

especially page 106 of SP8591_Flexowriter_Technical_Manual_1959.pdf will
be of help here i think
