[GreenKeys] Friden SFD-V

Yesterday, I spent searching the web for manuals. I found a nice one on ManualsLib.com. It is a technical manual for Models FL and FG, which are not for my machine, but most of the mechanical stuff looks very similar. This manual is not dated, but there are 1959 dates on some of the example letters, so it must be from around there. This manual better explains and has more and larger diagrams. From it I figured out (partially) how the character space works and got my machine to at least space, but sometimes two spaces. I did get the ribbon advance to work. After more cleaning I have the typing unit to work. The manual clearly explains how the power roller and cams work and how to set them. I had to set a couple. The instructions said to remove the power roller. At first glance that looked like a JOB, but the manual explained that all you have to do is pry it out and showed a picture. The cams are supposed to be 0.003" from the roller. I had 3 that were in contact. To make the adjustment, the roller has to be out and then a turn buckle has to disconnected from the cam arm. The turn bucket end is rotated and this moves the cam either closer to or farther away from the roller. Next, I hope to work on the carriage return. It only returns the length of a tab. The manual seems to indicate that the CR and TAB are related. More reading is needed. Mike Zahorik (414) 254-6768

Well..... my Bristol wrenches came in the mail yesterday, kinda neat. With them I found that once the belt pulley's and the punch drive gears were loose they would slid on the power shaft. BUT, the punch unit was in the way of the shaft moving very far. I found that the punch unit is held on by only two screws, so off it came and the power shaft can slide out that side of unit. I only moved it far enough to get the new o-ring (which I purchased at the hardware store) on. I found a paragraph in my Friden book that says how to set this shaft, which was easy enough. Then I power her up and found that the 'j' key was stuck. After looking around and lubing a few points I got the unit to type. The carriage return was also stuck, again it was dirt and no lube. Seems I got most of the typing items to work, but the space bar. I found that the space bar will pick the cam for the power drum and the space hammer (with no head) will pick, but carriage will not advance a space. In fact when a character is typed the carriage will not advance here either. So the problem must be closer to the carriage controls. Oddly, the carriage return, the back space and tab will work, so I figure there is something wrong between the space cam and the carriage. So far the books I have are not very helpful with text or pictures for repair. They are more for adjustments and the pictures are just bits of mechanisms, which are difficult to locate on the machine. So I will continue to look and if anyone has any ideas of where to look for the space bar function let me know. I hope to get this thing working and then move on to the punch/reader part. Thanks for the help, Mike
