I think I've covered everyone. Chuck, I tried to send you an e-mail but
your ISP thinks my server is a spammer. It's not a soammer, and it's not
your fault, you ISP is just being super careful. The internet is a mess!
Regardless, thank you for your help.
So with a copy of the manual and the order of the boards in hand, I
opened my ST-6 up to check on things again. I had every board in the
right slot, except the AK-1 board, which was in the right slot, just
upside down. HAL organized the card edge connector so that nothing bad
(i.e. reverse polarity) would happen to the card when installed in
bonehead mode, thankfully.
I ran through the adjustment procedures, and narrowed my problem down to
the 170 Hz mode. 850 peaks at the appropriate frequencies (2125 and
2975). Thanks to those that pointed out my math bone-head moment --
2125+850 = 2975, which is pretty darn close to 3kHz. After a bit of
investigation of the 170 Hz filter-limiter board I found that a wire on
one of the 88 mH was broken off at board level. After fixing that, my
problem remained. I finally narrowed it down to another 88 mH inductor,
this time on the 170Hz discriminator. One winding was shorted out, but
by backing off the mounting screw pressure a bit, I was able to "fix"
that problem as well. Now I'm able to peak the tuning meter at 2295 Hz,
which was simply non-responsive before. I haven't tested it with a TTY
attached, that will be a job for tomorrow.
Thank you to everyone that helped out with photos, documentation and
other information.
