Serial ports are still out there.
Look at the “low end” PC’s they make for things like retail terminal
applications. There are a surprising number of them with real serial ports
out the back. The higher end stuff dropped 9 pin’s out the back long
ago. The cheap stuff still has it. (or at least they did the last time I looked ..)
Even the higher end motherboards often have a serial port buried somewhere.
You need to get a cable and bracket to bring it out to the world. That’s not quite
as cheap or easy as it should be. This of course assumes you buy a retail
motherboard and build up from there. Most computer OEM’s cut every nickel
and dime they can on motherboards.
