[GreenKeys] iTelex

Hello All

Some of you know that I've been busy implementing i-Telex in my Gentex
simulator. It is now working (or at least most of it), so now I can divulge
some details.

My simulator is based on the old Gentex system, used by european
telecommunication administrations from the 50's to the mid 80's. It was
based on 5-bit teleprinters like Siemens T37, T100, and many others.
My simulator is strict local-only, with a limited number of printers,
limited by the number of COM ports you could stuff into a Windows PC.
Ressourcewise, it was not very hungry; my present system supports 8 printers
on a Windows2000 PC with 256 MB RAM and 200 MHz CPU.

When I became aware of i-telex.net, I could see some limitations, but also
some good things, so I decided to 'marry' the two systems into a new version
of my simulator.

This simulator is now mostly up and running, with some small outstanding
problems.
Anyway, here is how it works.

My server can be reached under the number 31067, which is the old Gentex
number from the telegraph office in The Hague (NL), which is where I spent
my youth. You will then get a list of available printers, which in most
cases will contain 31000 (sysop i_telex), 31095 (sysop gentex), and then a
list of physical printers.

That is one part of the story.
I'm often out of town, so I have implemented an alternate server, in this
case reachable under the number 21100 (when Fred has updated the subscriber
list), which is the old Gentex number of Copenhagen (DK), where I'm living
now.
This 'server' is a laptop, without attached physical teleprinters, so here
you will only mee the numbers 31000 and 31095.

As an extra, I've implemented a voicemail function (a contradiction in
terms, but you know what I mean) where you can leave notes.

Having said all this, I must thank the german i-telex guys, and especially
Fred, without whose help I could not have done this project. Before I
implemented i-telex, I was utterly 'blank' on how to handle firewalls,
redirection, and many other things. Thanks Fred !

Those who could be interested in the usermanual, are welcome to require one.
It is not yet totally updated, but it gives you some ideas on what is being
done

I wish everyone a Happy Newyear and many good i-telex hours

Nico de Jong
