The AN/FRC-93 while considered "fixed" station equipment was indeed used
in some of the most tactical set ups imaginable during the Vietnam War. We
had several of them at that great mud hole/dust bowl Ban Me Thout where
they were used for logistical phone patches. MARS stations in some of these
places had them too in the field units, Field Force units and artillery fire support
bases.
In Germany, while assigned to the 34th Signal Battalion, (VII Corps) we had the AN/FRC-93
(KWM-2A) installed in an AN/MSC-31, Systems Control Center van where it was
used by the Chief Signal Officer and the Communications Operations Chief to
communicate over a wide area on HF. Both of these were non-fixed station
applications where "fixed station" equipment was used due to necessity and
availabilty.

And for another funny example, as I recall the Collins KWM-2 as used by
the military was AN/FGC-something. It's a very portable radio, often
used mobile by hams, but maybe the military considered it insufficiently
rugged for use anywhere but in a fixed station.
