It is not too bad to get started with the SMD now. I started a few years ago. Biggest expense was about $ 200 for the Amscope stereo microscope. Ebay has some hot air and small tipped soldering iron combination stations for about $ 60 now. Doubt they would hold up under heavy usage, but not bad for just an occasional home user.
Major requirement is a steady hand.

But the bullet a couple years ago
For prototyping I assemble little breakout boards. Built a reflow oven out of a toaster oven. Many designs on the DIY sites.
