[GreenKeys] KLINSCHMIT TT-117 WIRING HELP

Duncan,

Back in the “real RTTY” days, it was very rare to see anything in print

about KL TTY’s. In fact, it was rare to see much about Teletype Model 28’s, except for

some articles in the RTTY Journal. Model 26’s and 15’s were the RTTY

workhorses.

Al,

Garble on your last transmission: "can I put this series look in series with keyboard" ???

In the upper right corner of the keyboard is the set of series-loop keyboard contacts (one for Mark & one for Space). Below them is a cylinder with cams spread out around the cylinder. This cylinder is prevented from rotating by a lever. There is a felt clutch behind the cylinder. Pressing a key generates the 5-bit code mechanically on 5 horizontal bars.

On a TT-4 or TT-98 (simpler versions of the TT-117), pressing a key moves the lever out of the way, the cylinder rotates and the staggered cams do a parallel to serial conversion to open & close the series-loop contacts above the cams.

In the case of the TT-117, there is also the option for parallel data output directly to the reperf. So if you just wanted to cut tape, you don't want the cam cylinder to rotate and send what you are typing out on the serial line. I don't remember all the details and I dont have a unit here to look at, but it seems like the solenoid that you are talking about is what allows the cams to rotate.

With the motor running, can you move the solenoid arm while trying to type and see if the cams rotate and interrupt the loop??

I would assume that the solenoid needs to be energized in order to type onto the loop. But you can't have the solenoid energized all the time or you would be sending continuous Blanks. There must be a contact to energize the solenoid somewhere. I don't know where the switch selection between parallel & serial operation was, but you probably just need to supply some voltage to the solenoid & keyboard switch combination.

(Seems like there should have been something written up about this mod in RTTY Journal or CQ or 73 magazine??? But shouldn't be too hard to solve it.)

I'll bring home the FGC-25 manual tomorrow, but probably won't be able to look at it until Wednesday.

Have fun,

Duncan

Back again. Removed solenoid and found 700 ohms in solenoid in series with 500 ohm fixed resistor switched in series with solenoid. will reinstall solenoid in keyboard and ck ckt.

Question: can I put this series look in series with keyboard and 60 ma loop from HAL ST-6 ?

Hi Duncan, Thanks for your input. I only have the TT-117. So without the Reperf I guess is a major problem. I did remove the keyboard and found that the solenoid that controls the lever to stop the unit from turning is open. Infinite open. So regardless of reperf or not the coil bad. Oh well....

Al,
The TT-117 was the page printer half of the AN/FGC-25. The other half
was the TT-178/9: reperf, tape reader and power supply. Do you have
both units or just the page printer?

We have an AN/FGC-68 (weather version of the FGC-25) at the AWA Museum
with a bad power supply and the TT-117 keyboard will not work without
the power from the reperf unit.

One of the "features" of the AN/FGC-25 was that you could punch tape as
fast as you could type. There was a special mode for a parallel
connection from the keyboard to the reperf, instead of normal serial
connection. It sounds like that circuitry is what is preventing the
keyboard from sending serially.

Robert Downs on this list sells manuals and may be able to get you a
scan of the FGC-25 maintenance manual, TM 11-5815-244-35. (I think I got
his last paper manual). I have the maintenance manual at the Museum and
I can bring it home on Tuesday and scan the schematic.

The operator's & low level maintenance manual for the FGC-25 is TM
11-5815-244-12 and is available on Google Books.

Have fun & good luck,
