Ranger is 315 miles from the coast.
To put that in perspective San Jose is 315 miles from Los Angeles.

As I explained to a friend, "This is like being in the top tier at a 
NASCAR race,
you're far enough away that 1. you're not going to get  hit by a flying 
car, and
2. you can see any tires coming in time to move out of the way."
