Jim, Pete, Ralph,
Thank you again for all of the help - it’s helped out a lot! Took a few days off, but am at it again...
Power supply… was using a bench supply with a supposedly adjustable current (not the case)… switched to the power supply Nick kindly mailed to me about three-quarters of a year ago. That seems to have fixed one of the problems I was having - I believe (I’m not going to test it out, just to be safe) the bench supply was surging too far when the perforator was selected… the power supply that Nick sent seems to be a bit more self-diciplined…
Speaking of the tape perforator… it takes quite a bit more juice than I expected. Wayne suggested using a fuse a bit more robust, so tried that. Went up from 62mA, to a quarter amp to a half amp and that (also) solved the problem… working fine there - nice!
Do have a multimeter and that’s how I was able to trace down the bad wire from before. The multimeter doesn’t like testing current for whatever reason (RadioShack multimeter must be - go figure ;p ~)… so instead I used resistance to test the contacts on the keyboard (did it a while back) - were all ok then.
The switch might be upside down for the selector magnets maybe, not sure. When I connected the bench supply supply to the magnet lines, the machine did quiet up but only did so when the switch was in the series position and running at 60mA. When in the parallel position, I was blowing the 62mA fuses at 20mA (need to double check on the 20mA). All wiring checked out on the ohm meter, the switch checked out also (I believe - there are no terminal numbers on it) and the resistor checked out, too… but I was using the bench supply (not Nicks) and didn’t have the additional 2k ohm resistor (if needed)… I might be misunderstanding something somewhere so it’s something I’ll have to figure out.
Surprisingly, the teletype wasn’t really altered that much from the previous ham - he mainly used it for NWS bulletins. There were a couple of minor alterations in the wiring, but those have been fixed and all is back to where it should be.
So that leads me to this... Ralph said to wire the keyboard and printer in series with each other with a 2k resistor. I have three 2k ohm resistors (at 10 watts)… but I’m more a visual person than otherwise (meh :/ - sorry). Would the wiring be something like the attached image (except for the selector/holding magnet difference & the wiring bypass of the line relay, the wiring is identical between the teletype and this schematic - verified)??? My photoshopped arrows will probably look pretty silly on there - sorry again in advance ;o ~…..
Anyways, thanks much again as always ^_^ !!! Off to rest now ;o ~…..
Sincerely,
Eric :)
