The basic idea of the Enigma was an American invention by a former 
convict named Heburn. He tried to market it to businesses, but the only 
ones who were really interested were the Mafia. The invention made it's 
way to Europe, where the wicked people  embraced and developed it.  Even 
today, decoding the Enigma is very slow and difficult unless you know 
the message contains a common word.
