Hi,

Thought I would jump in here real quick and then leave, I have  an AN/TGC-1 
which is
probably a -1C with the military changes that have been made  to it.

Listening to HF regularly, someone is still using RATT regularly, but I

I was in the military for many years. When computers finally took hold,  
teletype equipment
was rapidly phased out. During the transition period from teletype  
machines located n
Communications Centers, the older equipment was held "in-place" for about  
30 days to
make sure the newer computer gear worked. After that, those facilties  were 
dismantled
and the equipment sent to PDO (Property Disposal Office), where is was  
auctioned off
(via the usual  DOD bidding process), mostly to junk dealers and  metal 
scrap buyers and
recyclers.

It is highly likely that the military still has tons and tons of this  
equipment in storage
somewhere. We might hear about it in the next hundred years, once it is  
"found" again...

While a lot of printers, TDs and perforators have been preserved, NO tape  
relay
equipment has been saved anywhere that I am aware of, and that was a  large 
part of
the teletype scene in years past, especially in the military services who  
operated
worldwide ("tape relay") teletype networks before computers (AUTODIN).  
Tape Relay
sets would include KLI AN/TGC-5, AN/FGC-30, AN/FGC-70, Teletype Corp Plan  
55
systems, etc. (Earlier sets were the AN/TGC-1).

Hi again,

I was wondering if there are  any TTY units / networks still in commercial 
or governmental use today. I know  that a lot of private collectors such as 
myself preserve and use them  regularly, but are any still in active use 
today?

I have always thought that  when organizations upgrade to better comms 
systems, that they should preserve  the old system for a backup. I feel this 
especially for the  military.
