Hi all!
When I Worked for CNCP Telecomm's in Montreal, Que.,
there were several M37ASR sets on loan from Teletype
Corp'n. in the hopes the company wud purchase them...
I remember seeing them in action undergoing extensive
testing...
As I recall, they used mag tape drives, similar to the M40's...
They were evaluated for several months, before
being shipped back to Teletype...
It was planned the Canadian Government was going to lease
and have us install and maintain the equipment across
the country...
However, CNCP decided to use M35ASR's, KSR's and many
35RO's on the new networks...
The technicians were well versed on the Model 35 product
line, and we had lots of spare equipment, parts etc.
After extensive testing and evaluation, it was determined this
equipment was too difficult to service and maintain,
especially in remote areas of the country...
It wud have also meant large scale technical training, and
a huge investment in spares, plus the need to purchase
large quantities of the parts which were very unique to
the 37's...
Looking back, the 37's were very unique and difficult
to work on...
One goverment agency did purchase a significant quantity
of M37 equipment, and were used at embassy installations
throughout the world...
A friend of mine, working as a government commn's tech.,
told me they were continually flying tech's all over the place
to repair/maintain these machines...
I only worked on a very few of them, customer owned...
Apparently, the most difficult of all to repair
was the reperf unit...
I have heard lots of horror stories, about the guys
and their experiences with them...
As far as the 38's are concerned, Toronto had a few in service
as computer I/O terminals, however never saw any in
commercial service...
They are all but memories now!
Thanks for listening!
Ken
