Hi Skip,

Yes, I've played VIP bowling!

There are just a few more things on my wish list...

The floppy drive interface card to connect the Heathkit H-17 drives to the H-8

An HP9869 card reader

ROM packs for the HP9830A

Josh

Subject: Re: [GreenKeys] old computers 'n stuff

I was going to post my classic (old) computer stuff on a computer forum but it looks like there is some interest here. My only tie-in with a Teletype connected to a commercial computer was when I started to work for RCA Space Center in 1972 where I used a PDP-8 (fanfold paper tape used for booting) and a M28 or M35 for the system console. I later used a Xerox Sigma-3 computer with a 1-Mbit RAD (Rotating Access Drive (Device?) hermetically sealed and the size of car tire) with a TTY attached where you had to key in a switch pattern, hit the enter/run on the Xerox control panel, then type in “!*:1B1F,7” on the TTY to finish the boot. This system was used to run a spacecraft ground station for testing Navy Navigation satellites. The satellite commands were keypunched on IBM cards and then loaded onto the big mag tape drives.

My teletype days were in the 60’s before the big hobby computer push (that I could afford as a high school student). When I got interested in a home computer my teletype equipment was just sitting in the corner of the basement and I didn’t find a need or time to interface them. I started out with a Heathkit H-89 and added dual, external floppy drives and a home built custom I/O card. It probably still works but has been sitting covered on the shelf for many years (not interested in selling my baby … yet). I acquired lots of CP/M documentation, Heathkit courses, catalogs, and magazines (like REMARK, BYTE, …) which I would like to get to someone who has an interest to collect them and/or make use of them. I also picked up a Heath H-8 but never did much with it. Working for RCA I was able to get an RCA VIP computer that interfaced with an audio cassette tape recorder. I programmed in some games (anybody remember the bowling game with square balls?).

At work my office brought in the first Mac Plus around 1985 and we networked a few of them for use in presentations and spacecraft modeling. I bought one for myself (It’s on the shelf next to the H-89) and my sons made good use of it at college. I have been a Mac user ever since but have a couple PC’s that interfaces with my ham radio. I have lots of Mac OS-9 software/games that I would also like to get to somebody. Also, on the shelf is a Commodore C-64 with 2 floppy drives and a printer (in the original boxes).

I can provide a list if there is any serious interest or look for something that someone might be searching for.

Skip- K2RJF
