That stunt box is set up for selective calling. I can see the stripper
rod that goes across the lower section of the stuntbox.
It would have function bars “programmed” for a certain
sequence of letters that operate a slide
that, in turn, moves the “O” codebar to allow the printer to print,
unblocking the frontplate clutch on the left side of the typing unit.
Another set of function bars would be “programmed” to clear
the selected code and put the printer back into the “non-print”
mode. Coding could be anywhere from ZCZC to turn on
to NNNN to turn off - or, several letters for turn on (“XZ”) and
FIGS H LTRS to turn off. Sometimes, the selective calling function
operates a solenoid on the left side that unblocks the frontplate
clutch and the operated slide does other functions. I believe the
RO had a toggle switch on the front. That probably operates the
solenoid to allow an operator to monitor traffic on the circuit
that isn’t directly coded to that machine. These machines
took a beating, reading traffic all day and monitoring for
specific codes. Except for the “print” function, the machine
would run almost 24 hours a day.
In the 1970’s “electronic stuntboxes” were a hot item, though
short-lived. Hams used a “SELCAL” to allow the machine to
print when their call was received.

Here are a few shots. I counted 23 function bars in the stunt box. The most I had seen before this was 6. There are sets of electrical contacts to go with many of the function bars. They are fed via a wiring harness. I have not received any takers for this unit. I thought a freebee would generate some interest.

I have a 28 RO up for grabs. I picked up via Craigslist a few years ago from a guy that told me his grandfather acquired it from the railroad. He had kept it in a storage building behind the house. It had been there for a while. The cabinet is a bit rough at and near the bottom. The motor turns "hard" by hand. I have not tried to power it up. The gear set appears to be 75 WPM. It does need a bath and some TLC. It appears to be complete. There are numerous contacts at the stunt box that I had never seen on military tty. I have had it in my shop since I got it. I had intended to rebuild it, but have been over run by Kleinschmidts. I would like to find someone to adopt this one. If I keep it, I don't know when I'll get to it, if ever.
I'm in Greenville, SC for pickup.
