That's classical crypto - letters only, no numbers, punctuation, or
control functions. The encrypted version could be transmitted over
various transmission systems including Morse.
It was customary to type encrypted text in blocks of five letters,
so that manual operators could retype it without losing sync. A wrong
letter would only cause one wrong letter after decryption, but getting
off by one position would turn all subsequent text into garbage.
I don't know if this machine was set up to do that.
