More than once I have replaced a M15 carriage return strap with a double-
looped length of nylon cable lacing braid.  I'm sure that will outlast
the original fabric.  But if you want something more authentic and still
have the metal ends of the original, I suppose you could use a length
of flat shoe lace material.
