Doug, 

Actually, the tape punch is just a slave to the printer except it will punch the 8th bit as received. You still need to get an external input to be sure. 

You cant clean the area I am referring to with Q tips. Its a very narrow gap between armature and coil gap. Perhaps you could clean it with piece of paper tape with solvent on it. Thats how I clean the TR pulse contacts in the distributor area. The ones with Caution Hi Voltage plastic insulator over them. 

I will attach pics of the two parts, solenoid and armature and one of approximately the way they are installed except the gap is not as wide.

I took a photo that's very similar, and then used it as an illustration on the Wikipedia page for clutch:

I don't think anything there is sticky, but I can go at it with Q-tips and alcohol just in case.

I've removed and reinstalled both.

I can use the paper-tape punch to tell me what the binary data is on the code bars. That's an easy way to distinguish between rangefinder problems and print mechanism problems.
