Yes, Ed has that right.. and when it does come time to apply power (to the
motor, specifically), consider starting off at lower voltages using a
Variac type device. Don't just slam it with full mains power at once. This
way you can watch the current draw and prevent further damage if there +is+
a short circuit somewhere.
It's like when you get hold of an antique car or motorbike - before you
even think about trying to start the engine, first make sure the brakes are
in working order..
You are extremely lucky to have two pieces to work with. Unless both are
failed in the same way(s), you always have another to check against.
