12-24 volts is a myth.
Little things like inductance and di/dt require a minimum of 50 volts.
Even at 50 volts you have to retard the range finder (sample later in
the data) to avoid problems with the slow mechanical rise time on the
selector magnets.

Kind of like the old joke: "186,000 mile per second. It's not just a good
idea, it's the law."
