There are two types of punch pins, hardened steep and carbide. Teletype
used hardened steel and they need to be lubricated just like any steel puch.
Carbide does not need to be lubricated and can even punch steel, it does
wear but not as much as steel.
If you put mylar (actually a sandwich of mylar and paper or mylar and
aluminum) in a punch that has steel pins your punch's pins are toast and
even
the block (the stationary part) throat is worn to where even new pins will
no longer work. It may take more than one roll to do it but it will.
Not as bad as mylar but non lubricated paper will do the same thing, it
just take a few more rolls to do damage, how many .. as far as I'm concerned
less than one.
