A friend got one of those boxes when we were in JR HS he tried to tell
us it was receiving sat signals!

mill loop?

Nothing more than a group of neon lamp (NE2) relaxation oscillators,
driven by a 90V "B" battery, or a string of 10x NEMA 9V units. But the slight
differences in components lead to the appearance of a truly random sequence.
It's a simple yet clever electronic perceptual illusion.

I received a board in from Ebay that will convert about 10 volts to 30
volts up to about 60 to 90 volts. I was able to get about 95 volts out of the
one I bought.
It is almost like a DC transformer in that the higher the input voltage
the less current it will take to produce the same high voltage out.
I bought a couple of these DC buck converters a while ago too. In a drawer
I found what may have been my first soldered kit. Check it out it's an
Eico EC 700 Mystifier. Random blinking neon bulbs.

Some NE2 neon bulbs, resistors and capacitors. Back in the day I powered
it from a really long narrow 90 volt 'B' battery. They aren't manufactured
anymore.
These inexpensive buck converters are handy for powering Vacuum
fluorescent display (VFDs) projects too.
