Paperwork found in the shelter suggested that it had been installed on a HMMWV in
military service, before I got it and installed it on my own HMMWV. So
that, at least, puts 5-level RTTY hardware on the back of a military truck at
least as late as 1986.

A related story: My father was in the signal corps in WWII. Mostly, he
was in combat support, repairing radios equipment and sending things back
to the front. Most of the repairs, he said, consisted of washing the mud
out of the equipment, drying it, replacing the batteries and a quick test.

One of the pieces of equipment he remembers with a degree of bemused
fondness was a "walkie talkie" that was originally designed as a cavalry lance,
the SCR-511. That is, it was designed to fit into the lance socket on the
stirrup of a cavalry horse and be held as a lance was held. It was a good
radio, but the Battle of the Bulge featured no cavalry operations. So,
lance sockets were fitted to jeeps, an in some cases these things were hand
carried into combat.
